The idea of creating a cultural center belongs to the Mariupol City Council. The authors of the concept are leading Polish and national experts in the field of creating cultural institutions. The creation of the center is planned in a very symbolic place for Mariupol, which is located on Georgievskaya Street, 63. According to the authors of the concept, this particular building, associated with a certain social trauma and negative, tragic events, should become a place of reflection on the history and culture of the city, a place for researches, discovery and knowledge of the inhabitants of their identity.

The multifaceted reconstruction of historical memory will become a priority in the activities of the сenter.
Memorable dates in the history of the building
The building was built at the beginning of the last century as a residential building of Mariupol merchants. Later it was rebuilt as a gymnasium, which symbolized an understanding of the necessity and importance of education for the development of the city.
Civil War-beginning of XX century

The occupation in 1941-1943
There is a labor exchange in the building, from where more than 60 thousand people were taken to Germany for forced labor.
The tragic events of 2014
The building in which the city's internal affairs department was located. It was seized and later liberated as a result of a special operation of the Ukrainian military and special services.

Case study, which was held in April in 2019, with an emphasis on the portrait of the city, showed the expressive request of residents and visitors of the city to memorialize the memory of the dead people and tragic events, and the desire to build new objects that would become a symbol of the revival of the city after the tragic events.
The new cultural center will become a place where new opportunities are created, new meanings and innovative ideas are born, where all people can honor the history of the city and rely on the lessons with confidence in the future.
